Advanced Orthopedic Manual Therapy
Within the physical therapy profession, manual therapy is defined as a clinical approach utilizing skilled, specific hands-on techniques, including but not limited to manipulation/mobilization, used by the PT to diagnose and treat soft tissues and joint structures for the purpose of modulating pain; increasing range of motion; reducing or eliminating soft tissue inflammation; inducing relaxation; improving contractile and non-contractile tissue repair, extensibility, and/or stability; facilitating movement; and improving function.
Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM)
Instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) is a skilled myofascial intervention used for soft-tissue treatment. It is applied using instruments that are usually made of stainless steel with beveled edges and contours that can conform to different body anatomical locations and allows for deeper penetration. IASTM can also be used for the detection and treatment of soft tissue disorders.
Spinal and Extremity Mobilization and Manipulation
A manual therapy technique comprising a continuum of skilled passive movements to the joint complex that are applied at varying speeds and amplitudes, that may include a small-amplitude/ high-velocity therapeutic movement (manipulation) with the intent to restore optimal motion, function, and/or to reduce pain.
Cupping Therapy
This therapy utilizes silicone or plastic cups that create suction on the body surface. These cups can be moved over the skin using gliding and rotating techniques while gently pulling up on the cup, or may be left in one position for a short time to facilitate joint mobilization or soft tissue release. Suction reaches deep into the soft tissue and its attachments, lifting and decompressing the tissue while providing a passive stretch and improving circulation. Another benefit is to pull inflammatory products from an injury site to the surface of the skin where the lymphatic system can more readily eliminate them.
Percussion Therapy
Percussive therapy is a massage technique designed to treat soft tissue pain. A massage or percussion gun uses rapid strokes to stimulate blood flow to the muscles, which can help to relieve soreness, improve range of motion, improve flexibility, and help with recovery from injuries.
Percussive therapy is great for use on any muscle in the body as it gets deep into the muscle belly with focused pressure to reduce trigger point tone.
Advanced Therapeutic Exercise
Therapeutic exercises are highly selective physical activities that will be assigned by your physical therapist in order to restore and maintain strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, mobility, balance, and stability. The exercises assigned will be based on each individual patient’s diagnosis, assessment, and goals. The goal of these exercises is to help return a patient to their pre-injury state pain-free and/or improve performance.
